Light Up My Life: High School Spectroscopy Investigation

Help me give my students a spectroscopy lab experience to understand how scientists study the stars. This inquiry-based lab would not be possible without a carousel power supply or spectrum tubes.

My Project

My chemistry students are eager, hands-on scientists who love spending time in our laboratory. This year, students will learn about the origins of the universe to better understand how the elements came to be.

One question that we will address is: how do astronomers study the stars?

Students will study the theory behind spectroscopy and the electromagnetic spectrum. It's important that students not only learn about spectroscopy but that they conduct an experiment in which they use spectroscopes. In the lab, students will collect data using spectroscopes, analyze their data, and draw conclusions. Their findings will be synthesized in an authentic lab report.

Lab experiences in high school science should be the rule, not the exception. If you have ever taken a chemistry course, you may remember one or two influential experiments that you conducted as a student. Help provide my students with a meaningful laboratory investigation!
