My Students

I teach kindergarten in a Title 1 school in West Harlem, New York City. The children are an active energetic group who enjoy learning through exploration and discovery. As their teacher, I want to support their eagerness to question and excitement about learning.

This year the children are curious about the effects of light and shadows outside on neighborhood walks.

A light table can support their investigative minds and natural curiosity by offering a space for experimentation inside the classroom.

My Project

The students noticed the light streaming through the windows at the end of the school day and immediately began to experiment with shadows and reflections of light. Through their questioning, emerged our Light and Shadow Inquiry. The table in the classroom will provide children with the opportunities to experiment throughout the day.

The light table incorporates the use of technology as part of a developmentally appropriate medium during project and work choice time.

Layers of materials with a variety of shapes offer meaningful provocations and further questioning. It will become a permanent center in the classroom where the children can experiment and build upon their discoveries.

Art is a central part of our curriculum. The light table is another canvas whereby the children will be able to merge science related experimentation with artistic expressions. Translucency, viscosity and color become a source of curiosity which develops into understanding and high order thinking.

We hope to promote a love of learning through play. The light table can provide a focal point for investigations as the children actively engage while exploring their interests.
