My Students

I teach in a small community and over 90% of our kids are on free/reduced lunch. The majority of my students live in poverty. I have students from many culturally diverse backgrounds. I have had students from Somalia, the Pacific Islands of Pohnpei and Pinglap and Guam. From El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

These kids literally come from all over the world.

They are so diverse and unique. The majority are English Language Learners who speak a second language. In fact, 187 of the 400 students in our building are English Language Learners.

My Project

These materials can help my students because studies have shown that harsh fluorescent lighting can cause headaches and overstimulate the brain. Also, the fluorescent lighting used in classrooms has been linked to an increase in student anxiety and to overstimulate students with ADHD and/or Autism. These simple lights will replace the fluorescent lights in the classroom, creating softer lighting. With softer lighting students will be able concentrate more and have less stress on them. They can come into the classroom and instantly feel calm, relaxed and ready to learn. I believe that changing the lighting of a room and do wonders for the atmosphere of it and the wonders for the people in it.
