My Project

Instead of squashing 25+ technical theatre students around one light board to watch one person model the process of lighting design, instead of 40 film students only observing and critiquing the use of light, shadow, and color in an iconic film, I want my students working with lighting equipment to test out principles and ideas of their own design and creation. It's important students learn from masters through observation, discussion, and explicit instruction, but I want to develop the growth mindset, technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving of my film and theatre students by giving them hands-on work with as much of the technical elements of creation as possible. The principles of lighting design, particularly, can be an ephemeral topic if it's all a mental exercise with no physical component. These small lighting kits will allow my students to test out ideas and principles in manageably-sized projects with practicable instruments during in-class workshops.

Students in my film and theatre classes need access to equipment on a small scale to experiment with light, color, and composition as they learn to create their own designs to communicate mood, theme, and setting.

Having time to experiment with principles like 3-point lighting, where to put a key light, and how to blend colors of light in small groups will allow them to discover, workshop their ideas, and convey meaning without the barrier to execution of needing advanced technical skills or expensive, cumbersome equipment.
