I teach preschool students (ages 3-5) with developmental delays in a Title I school in Arizona. Additionally, we are fortunate to have a couple typically developing "peer role models" in our classroom.
My students experience challenges like learning school skills, developing communication strategies, increasing academic knowledge, and improving social skills like sharing and positive peer interactions.
My goal is to provide interventions that decrease their delays by the time these beautiful kids go to kindergarten! I believe in Universal Design for Learning, creating a classroom environment where all kids can be successful and maximize their progress. My students all have unique gifts and skills that are growing every day. They love to learn, come to school every day with huge smiles, and have families that are dedicated to their progress (despite the lack of financial resources in our community). These kids are the future, and meaningful learning opportunities are their key to success.
My Project
Students with autism experience the world differently than those without autism. For these students, florescent lighting has a bright glare and may even appear to be flickering. Some people with autism report that this causes them physical pain.
One way to minimize "sensory overload" from florescent lights is to purchase light lenses that filter the light and eliminate the flickering.
These light lenses go up in the ceiling and appear to look like clouds in the sky. This will greatly improve learning for my students who have sensory challenges. Further, it will greatly help two new students with autism who will be starting in my class shortly.
These light lenses would make an amazing difference for us! They last for a very long time, so they will be loved for years to come! It would be incredible if we could fund this project to improve our learning environment so that students with autism in my developmental preschool class can maximize their progress!
