This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our science classes always begin with me asking my ELL students, "How have we arrived today?" and my students reply, "Ready to learn!" Science learning can't begin until my students are receptive and ready to learn. This little chant gets everyone together and ready to begin on just the right note.

My ELL students arrive to school from a multitude of countries and with a wide range of prior education.

The common thread among my students is low income and limited access to technology. While we live in a digital world, my students struggle to gain the necessary digital literacy to succeed in our ever increasingly digital world. All my ELL students enthusiastically embraced learning with technology when I have been able to book computer time. Unfortunately, access to school computers is limited and frequently over booked. With a class set of Chromebooks, the students would exponentially increase their access to digital learning.

My Project

My ELL students would use the Chromebooks for station activities to complete interactive science simulations, watch science videos and animations. By supplying my class with a set of Chromebooks, many science literacy applications would now be available to my students on a consistent basis to promote and enhance science and digital literacy. In addition to digital science simulations and laboratories, my students would also be able to use the computers to improve their reading and writing in science skills. The students will be able to consistently practice their reading and writing skills. Students will utilize writing programs to practice writing skills and will have access to digital science magazines to enhance science reading skills. Finally, students frequently come to my class during their study hall periods and after school. Having this class set of chrome books will give students access and opportunities to improve their digital literacy.

My ELL students come from low income homes with limited to negligible access to technology.

By providing a class set of Chromebooks, my students will have essential access to technology and digital learning. Not only will students dramatically increase their science learning but they will also conquer the digital divide that currently prevents them from succeeding in our digital world.
