Life's a Stitch, Sew Our Students Will Start a Business!

Help me give my students serger and fabric they need to start their micro-economy business. They'll use the serger to create cloth napkins and other wares which they will sell to fund their end-of-year events.

My Project

A key component of the middle school Montessori curriculum is to establish and maintain a student ran micro-economy. Until students have established themselves and their business is self sufficient, they need start-up materials for marketing, and basic equipment and supplies to run events. Our students come from twenty-six zip codes around Baltimore City and they are as diverse as our city is, making a community that is 66% African American, 27% White, 3% Hispanic/Latinx, 4% Asian or more than one race; approximately 45% come from families considered low-income. A micro-economy is an engaging hands-on way to teach our students financial literacy.

We wish to create a program that will teach the full spectrum of a business plan with a goal of financing their end of year community events.

This will involve creating a budget, refining skills needed for creating their products, assigning jobs, marketing their items, and finally assessing its effectiveness with simple costs vs. income accounting.

Students will need the requested serger and fabric to create their products. A serger will add to the equipment they already have, and a stock of fabric will help kick start their business until they can use future income to purchase more. Once they learn how to create professional quality sewn crafts, they will be on their way to establishing a business which all future classes can build upon and grow. Students will learn how a basic business works, learn how to conduct themselves professionally, and they will learn how to apply basic accounting to assess their success, - all skills that will benefit them in their future personal and professional lives.
