My Project

Having a library that includes books about these topics will engage even my most reluctant readers. It was inspired by a scholar finding a world record's book tucked away on a table. Immediately my entire class became excited. Scholars were crowding around the book trying to see what strange skills and abilities people had. They began discussions with their peers about what special skills they might have. My hope is that having access to books like this will inspire my students like this every day. During this time after Covid, it has been so difficult to engage learners and see their excitement. That brief ten minutes of exploration reminded me of why I became a teacher in the first place.

My students requested that I get more books like this.

Especially, more world record books so that they could compare how the record holders have changed from year to year. The Eye Witness Texts are directly related to what students have learned in previous and what is in our current science and social studies curriculum. The students have enjoyed reading the Science Comic books in their ELA class, so I wanted to provide an opportunity for them to continue that in their science class.

My students are 4th grades who are learning that the world is an amazing place full of mystery and wonder and that with the right tools they can be anyone and do anything. I think having these texts to inspire them to explore their interests will be one of the tools to help them start their journeys.
