Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a rural school without a surrounding town. The school is the center of our farming community. 77% of the students in our district are on free and reduced lunch. Our elementary has slightly more at 82%. Our school is the "safe place" for many of our students, a place where they are fed and cared for, a place where they can feel valued. Our student body is made up of several children that have been removed from their homes for various reasons, some short-term, some permanently.

These students deserve the best that we can give them.

The students that have been identified with dyslexic tendencies have struggled with reading. They and their families are thankful to have a specialized instruction that will teach them coping strategies they can use for the rest of their lives. These kids are hard workers. They never outgrow dyslexia, they learn ways to be more successful.

My Project

This is currently my 5th year as the district dyslexia therapist. I would really like to train in the Scottish Rite Take Flight Program. It has proven to be an excellent program. The program I teach is good, but we need something better. Our students deserve the best. 77% of my district's students are on free and reduced lunch. Our elementary campus is slightly higher with 82%.

Currently, I work with 30 dyslexic students from 2nd through 6th grade.

They are hard-working kids that want to read better and be more successful. This program goes into greater depth with more reading practice for the students.

The Take Flight program covers all of the following areas: alphabet/dictionary

graphophonemic knowledge/phonics

morphology

word recognition

reading fluency

vocabulary

reading comprehension

phonemic awareness

spelling

current research and legislation relating to dyslexia

characteristics of dyslexia including identification and placement, multisensory and discovery teaching techniques.
