Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This library has been dormant for many years, but it's about to come back to life with the help of a weekly book club called, "Life Sucks, But this Book Club Doesn't". I am a high school librarian teaching in a library that serves 6 small public schools that share one building and one library. My students are in 9th-12th grade and each school has a special theme. One school focuses on history and morals . Another school's theme is design and construction, while yet another focuses on both the culinary and management aspects of the food industry. Another school teaches students hotel and restaurant management, while another is a bilingual Spanish/English school for students who've only been in the US for 4 years. The last school is a school for special needs students who range from developmentally disabled to mentally challenged. These students come from high needs communities.

Our library has not had a librarian for several years, and since these schools are all new, the library is lacking in resources. One way to hook our kids back into the library is to run a book club after school. I've interviewed students and they all say that they want to read more graphic novels and comics. I thought that giving them the chance to read, discuss, and reflect on a cool graphic novel in a creative way would get kids to buy into the library as a vital and vibrant community space that serves both their interests and their needs. These kids can't buy these books themselves, but they want them badly. I can't keep them on the shelf!

In order to get this book club off the ground I need to hook the kids with a great title. The book, "Life Sucks" by Jessica Abel is a graphic novel recommended for teens by the American Library Association. It hits the themes that resonate with teens- alienation, boredom, love, acceptance, adventure, etc. The main characters are a teenage vampire boy, and his object of affection, a cool goth girl. I've already shown a copy of the book to students and they all say, "It's hot! I'd read it!" So I think we have a winner here. I want to start off with 15 copies so that the book club can be small and intimate. I also need drawing supplies such as pencils, markers, and paper because after we read, and discuss the book, we're going to form smaller groups of writers and artists and create our own comics that are inspired by the main themes we find in the book itself. This is a way for students to express what they have learned about the themes we discuss. It is also a way for them to express themselves in a cool and creative way that they are not given the opportunity to do given the lack of supplies and lack of money to support the visual arts.

You will make it possible for students from 6 diverse schools to come together as a community of readers, learners, artists, and writers. My students will analyze text, discuss themes and topics near and dear to their hearts, and they will reflect in a creative way on what they have learned from their reading experience.
