My Students

My students are freshman in high school and can't wait for the day that they can support themselves and be independent.

My students have various special learning needs and are in the Life Skills Class.

My students are caring, respectful, hard working, and very eager learners. They meet every challenge (physical, emotional, academic) with the "I can do it, just show me and let me try" attitude. My students have set personal goals for an independent life (post-high school). My students will need to transition into the "real world" prepared and ready to live the independent life they desire. To prepare them for the future, my students will need many opportunities and experiences in the work environment. My students are beginning to learn job readiness skills and self-sufficiency skills (ex. cooking, cleaning, laundry, how to budget money, buy food, pay bills). My students will then participate in the school districts' community based Career Connections Classes during their junior and senior years.

My Project

The students in the Life Skills Class and the Career Connections Classes will host a luncheon for staff of the school district and community with the guidance and support from adults. The students will do the budgeting, planning, preparation, and serving of the meal to the guests. The students will decide on menu, theme / decorations, and a gift. They will shop for food and cooking items at the local grocery store. The students will assist in the set up of the luncheon buffet. Using recipes and adult guidance, students will cook the selected menu items using taught kitchen and food safety preparation skills. After the luncheon, the students will clean the luncheon area and kitchen area. On the days following the luncheon the students will determine what went well and what areas need improvement. They will give the pros and cons to the jobs they had prior to, during and after the luncheon. The students could then seek out those preferred jobs for more experiences.

This project will prepare students for their own independent living and give them skills that will help them in their future life.

It will provide them with self-esteem and encourage them for their future. It will give them the feeling of independence and leadership they may be seeking. (They will feel the need of accomplishment and success to have started and completed a large project.) They will have earned respect of peers, family, staff and the community.
