Imagine your extended family at Thanksgiving where you gather a multitude of strong personalities and place them all under one roof. This is such a great comparison to what my classroom looks like for many reasons. My classroom is filled with some of the most wonderful, and hilarious personalities you will ever see; all of which are totally different from each other! Meaning, their lessons are all completely modified to each student and their needs. I have students who constantly have an excitement to learn and who genuinely love school!
School is the one public place in the community that they feel valued for who they are as individuals, for their gifts and for what they can bring to the table.
Our school environment is out of this world amazing. The junior high students love my Life Skills kids and make them feel like celebrities in the school... to be honest, they pretty much are! I am beyond grateful for DonorsChoose.org for providing me an avenue to award my kiddos with materials and sensory items for my kiddos to continue to thrive as the students they were born to be and not what the standards tell them to.
My Project
My students in my classroom are those having mild to severe cognitive disabilities. These are students are in my Life Skills classroom to work on modified curriculum in all subject areas. This project was created in order for my students to build independence in area's they've never had to before. They are accustomed to others doing every day tasks for them, but my hope is to prepare them for the real world. One incredible way I can do this through creating work task boxes to engage my students in hands on activities that work on their personal goals.
Having each of these materials enable me to create meaningful learning experiences and activities that will last for years to come.
Having laminated materials allows the contents to be easily picked up by my students, which is important for those with fine motor difficulties. The velcro circles would greatly bless our students, because they are able to easily complete activities on their own. Velcro has always been our saving grace for creating special education materials.
