My Students

My students come to school every day with smiles on their faces, a warm hello and ready to learn. They love school and they love being surrounded by friends and people who love working with them.

As their special education teacher, I push them to new limits, with patience, love, and excitement, because I know with the right tools they are capable of achieving great things.

I adapt the Common Core Learning Standards in a way that can reach my students at many different levels of learning, and in our classroom, sensory integration is key when adapting materials.

My students, all with autism, down syndrome or other severe cognitive disabilities, require unique sensory needs and integration to help them reach new heights in my classroom. Through sensory integration they learn everything from ELA, Math, Social Studies and Science to turn-taking, socialization and daily living skills and have fun while doing it!

My Project

All of our students aged 10-14 are eager to learn skills to teach them independence within their community. They come to school everyday happy and eager to learn. Hands on activities are the best way our students learn and learning in our Adapted Daily Living room is no exception.

Through the use of an Adapted Daily Living room our students, with disabilities, are explicitly taught skills they need to be successful on their own.

These skills include cooking, cleaning, laundry and making their bed just to name a few. With these materials students will learn how to take care of themselves. The room is divided into 4 sections (kitchen, laundry room, bedroom and living room) and throughout the year students will learn the skills needed to manage each area in their daily lives. The gift cards will be used as PBIS (positive behavior) rewards for students. Students who are exhibiting positive behavior will have the opportunity to earn the Amazon giftcards. Once earned they can choose a recipe they would like to make in our school kitchen and shop on Amazon for the ingrediants they need. All other materials will be used within the ADL room when learning how to properly cook, clean, do laundry and maintain an apartment or space of their own.
