Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Seeing my kids push to achieve the impossible, from eating with a fork or just learning to eat, holding a marker, turn-taking, brushing teeth, combing hair, and getting dressed. These life skills we all take for granted every day are the skills we work on. We incorporate chores in the class such as, setting the table, preparing snacks and through trash. Allowing our students to be part of preparing our snacks or lunch is a huge deal.

Consistency, practice, dedication, and teamwork.

Working together with Speech-Language Therapists, Occupational and Physical therapists, and a vision teacher, we have created a great class that fosters learning in every aspect.

My Project

Tega! Tega! the conversation starts, no known words but vocal sounds wanting to share their exciting news desperately. This is how every Monday starts for me. Encouraging my students to get their communication devices to share with me what's on their minds. Starting the day with smiles, structured routines, and stubborn personalities.

These life skills we all take for granted every day are the skills we work on.

Seeing their faces when they accomplish a task they struggled with for weeks or months but yet, they don't give up. My staff and I have high expectations for them, and we are with them every step of the way. We accomplish many different skills throughout the day, one being preparing snacks and setting our class table. We bring in different foods to be prepped for snack and have to store it in a refrigerator in another building, making accessible hard. Having a fridge in our room would open the door to keeping our snacks fresh and handy. Having cold water or milk when kids request and store food that our students bring for lunch. Multi-sensory learning is also a hug component in creating functional lessons. Having the ability to explore with different textures is essential for learning.
