My Students

I am an English teacher who is lucky enough to have the same students for two consecutive years. This is my fourth year in the looping model. I have found this experience to be gratifying because of the close relationships I build with the students and their families. My students mature quite a bit from September of 7th grade to June of 8th grade.

Our community is still struggling to recover from Griffiss Air Force Base shutting down and the construction of new prisons built in the immediate area.

Through a Community Schools model our students are receiving additional enrichment activities as well as supports for families.

My Project

After reading the book The Book Whisper by Donalyn Miller, I am inspired to transform every student into a life long reader. Quite simply put, when students are given the choice to select their own books the quality of time spent reading is amazing as evidenced in my first week implementing this philosophy. I want to transform my classroom into a library of high interest books of many different genres. The days of reading the same novel at the same time is quickly losing viability. Students can have a richer experience with self selected books that they will actually read.

My goal will be for each student to read 40 books per year.

Since I have the students for two years, my goal of transforming each into life long readers is achievable!
