Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Next year, I will be teaching an amazing group of fourth graders at a public school in New York City. Our school is in a vibrant neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. The majority of my students speak Spanish, Arabic, or a Chinese language at home.

My kids are passionate, compassionate, curious, and creative.

It is always my priority to give them as many opportunities as possible to cultivate their love for learning. I strive to give my students as many "Aha!" moments as possible, those moments when they make connections between school and the real world or when they see the value of the content we are studying.

My Project

Genius Hour: sixty minutes each week solely devoted to student creativity and exploration.

Next year, I will be implementing Genius Hour in my classroom.

Some students will be ready to independently research and create projects of their choosing. But others will need more structure and guidance. For those students, I will be sharing with them my passion for baking. Students will learn the basics of baking, which will ultimately allow them to explore and experiment with their own recipes.

I love baking with my students because, in addition to it being fun for all, it ties nicely into many core subjects. We will explore the Science of baking (how a given ingredient affects the final product); the Math behind baking (measuring, using fractions, etc.); and the Reading necessary to follow a recipe.

I have baked with my students before (in the classroom and in an after-school club), and I am requesting the equipment that I have, in the past, brought from home.
