My Students

Some of my students often arrive to school without eating breakfast. They find it difficult to concentrate while they are hungry. Others are able to stay better focused during a tutoring session when they are offered a healthy snack. Having nutritious treats available is a great motivator.

My students come from diverse backgrounds in regard to culture, race, ethnicity, and economic status.

Their life circumstances vary greatly, as well. Some students may be homeless; others may have recently migrated from a country they may have needed to flee from; many live in single parent households and they are struggling to help their parent with younger siblings and household responsibilities. All of these possibilities may be occurring while they are doing their best to maintain their focus on schoolwork and achieving good grades while not having many life essentials available to them. Having a healthy snack available during the day may be one of the few things that can help to sustain these children's focus and dedication to their schoolwork.

My Project

Students who have not eaten breakfast or appear hungry during the day may find it inhibits their ability to focus in class. Healthy snacks such as granola bars, fruit snacks, and trail mix will be offered when students appear to be struggling with having their life essentials provided for. This nutritious treat may be offered before school begins or during a study group. If a child shares that they are hungry, this will be a resource that will be available to offer them in order to help them get through the day.

Being able to provide life essentials for children in need will support their ability to focus and learn.

Children cannot learn when they are too concerned about their hunger and where their next meal may come from. These healthy snacks will be a wonderful resource to have available to offer them.
