Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach reading intervention to a group of students who struggle to read, and struggle to engage with written text of any kind. It's challenging, frustrating, and so difficult for most of them, but we don't give up! It is essential they have all the supports necessary to ensure their success!

My students come from homes that struggle with poverty on a variety of different levels.

Some of my students deal with extreme poverty, while others are scraping to get by with the bare essentials. Our school is acutely aware of the challenges our students face when they leave us each day, so we offer a lot of programs (food service, as well as social and emotional) to ensure we're helping them in every way possible. But when they go home at night, so much is out of our control. They're babysitting siblings while parents are at work, cooking and cleaning apartments that house multiple families, some of them are working themselves into the wee hours of the night - there is little time for homework and academic enrichment. They need so many things, and go without so much because of their families socio - economic status. This has an adverse impact on their educational performance at school, which in turn impacts their ability to break this cycle and make a better life for themselves.

My Project

This LIFE ESSENTIAL donation of blankets is so I can gift them to my students so they can take them home and ensure their needs are being met during the cold, winter months. If they are cold at night, they wont be able to sleep. If they can't sleep, they either wont come to school at all the next day, or they'll show up lethargic and unproductive. This donation would assist in mitigating this issue.

The only way my students will perform in the classroom is if their needs (hunger, sleep, and hygiene) are first taken care of.

Unfortunately, my student's families are far too often unable to meet these needs completely. This donation will give the young people who walk into my classroom a small shot at giving school everything they have. Please help me help my students!
