it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As spring creeps into New York City, my class is going dive into the life cycles of plants and animals. My student's exposure to nature and animals is limited. Many of them were in awe during a field trip to a park where they saw first bugs and insects crawling around in the grass. For some of them it was the first time they had every seen such creatures. Understanding how an animal grows is something that fascinates them. I really want them to experience their science learning first hand by watching how a baby chicken goes from an egg to a chick and how a butterfly grows from a caterpillar to a butterfly creature of flight.
My students love science and get a great amount of joy from the simplest activities like watering the plants in the classroom. Science is the one part of the day that everyone waits for and looks forward too! One of our most favorite activities is feeding and taking care of our pet gecko, Glinda. Everyone wants to be in charge of feeding it and when it comes out of its house our lessons all but stop so we can watch what is going to do next. I would love to be able to allow them to watch first hand the life cycle animals instead of just reading in a textbook. In order to do so we need an incubator and a butterfly kit with a house.
They never fail to amaze me with their questions when we read about animals in their textbook, I can only imagine the wonder and awe they would have it they had the opportunity to witness such events in person. Having these materials will also help build my students responsible and sharing skills. I hope that you will consider filling our request and know that my class will be able to forever hold such memories with them for the rest of their lives.
