My Students

My first grade classroom is filled with the college graduates of 2030. We embrace grit, integrity, curiosity, and zest. We work hard so that we can graduate high school, enroll in competitive colleges and universities, graduate college, and positively impact change in our community, Detroit.

My class is currently home to 27 tenacious first graders.

They call Detroit home and many of them have seen little outside of their own neighborhoods. Around 86 percent qualify for free and reduced lunch and 100 percent are black. Only 15 percent of my class came in on grade level in reading, and 19 percent in math. My school, a college preparatory school, is working diligently to provide its scholars with the quality education they deserve, one that will prepare them for college. My class is comprised of scholars from age 5 to age 7, all eager and ready to tackle the rigor of first grade. Their parents are some of the hardest workers I know. Many work 2 jobs and/or the night shift, but are still able to find time to volunteer in the classroom. We are a community dedicated to learning.

My Project

This year we will be learning about life cycles in science. We will be primarily focused on plant and animal stages of life and on requirements for life. We will also be deepening our understanding of plants and animals by comparing them to non-living things, and to each other. These resources will give my students an opportunity to experience and observe life cycles in the classroom. We will place the grow kits in our classroom window and watch the plants grow and change throughout the year. The Grow a Frog Kits will also be kept in the classroom so that students will be able to observe the tadpoles develop into frogs! Having both of these resources in the classroom will give students the opportunity to observe, and compare and contrast the growth cycles of plants and animals. These materials will allow my student to make personal connections to the content and give them a richer, firsthand understanding of plant and animal cycles and the needs for sustaining life.

My scholars are curious.

Living in Detroit, their opportunities are often limited, and consequently they suffer from a learning deficit. In order to be college competitive they need hands on engagement. When this project is funded it will provide my scholars with experiences that they would most likely not have otherwise, and it will facilitate critical thinking and evaluation skills. Additionally, it will provide our classroom with joy, curiosity, and a stronger investment in learning.
