My Students

My school currently serves approximately 1500 students in grades 9-12. My students come from homes with range from farms to public housing and everything in between. Most are from economically disadvantaged homes, as 100% of our students receive a free breakfast, lunch, and after school dinner.

Our motto here is that we are a "PARK." The students and staff alike have bought into this message of Positivity, Attentiveness, Respect, and to always Keep going.

We provide them with a safe learning environment and try to meet each and every student's academic and personal needs. We feel if they are safe and comfortable, there are no limits to what they can achieve.

Our students have overcome many hardships by the time they come to us in the eighth grade. As a teacher, you set out to make a difference thinking you have something to offer your students, when in reality, it is often the students that do the most teaching.

My Project

At our school, we will be initiating a new life- skills centered curriculum for our inclusion in English 12 classes. We will have an opportunity to use literature to touch on areas of education the classroom doesn't usually get to cover, all while still acquiring the reading and higher-level thinking skills within our standards.

In education, it is our primary job to prepare our students for whatever lies ahead in their futures.

This class will have the opportunity to focus on vital topics, such as mental health, the addiction crisis in our state of West Virginia, empathy through the celebration of diversities, goal setting, and problem-solving. We based this curriculum around the constantly asked question of "When will I ever use this?" Every topic and activity will give students the answers to "Why are you teaching us this?" and "When will I be able to use this in life?" The supplies included in this project will be for two main activities. First, we will be doing a poetry unit utilizing Tupac’s “The Rose that Grew from Concrete.” Poetry is usually a dull subject for high schoolers, so using a relevant source is a great way to engage them. The supplies in this project will also assist in a project in conjunction with the book “The Last Lecture” where students will use post it’s to write small personalized notes of appreciation to teachers throughout the building!
