My Students

At the beginning of each school year, I ask each of my students to write down a goal that they have for this year and a goal they have for the future. A common thread for all my students is often to pass their current year of high school and to either move on to the next grade or graduate from high school. Their goals for the future vary from wanting to attend college or a vocational school or wanting to join the work force or military. Many of my students have shared that they will be the first generation of their family to graduate from high school and to them, that is the most important thing.

No matter the obstacle, each and every one of my students wants to learn and earn the most important thing to them, a high school diploma.

Though they may have both economic and academic struggles, they embrace learning and will try and access and grasp it any way they can! They come to school eager and ready to learn, sharing with us all their struggles, accomplishments and goals. We celebrate each and every one of them daily in my class and school.

My Project

As we transition back to fully in person learning this year I want to re-engage my students' love for reading by catching their attention through new and interesting books. One of Us is Lying is set in a high school in which 5 students walk into detention but only 4 leave alive. What happened to the 5th student and which student was the one who killed him? This is the question my students will need to answer throughout reading this novel.

With the variety of tv series centered around crime and solving mysteries, online games, other books, social media websites and much more many of my students are very interested in solving a variety of mysteries.

This book is not only a mystery they will solve as reading but is set in high school and plays into many of the same drama, incidents and events that they could or have experienced during their high school career. Making it very easy for them to relate to the characters and events taking place at Bayview High.

I will not just have the students read the book but they will actively engage in a variety of activities related to the book, such as keeping their own detective's notebook with clues, creating timelines related to the events before and after the murder, creating their own crime scene within the classroom, and much more. Students will also actively take part in writing activities throughout this unit.
