My Students

A typical day in my classroom starts with singing in Spanish, and then moves forward with us trying to make daily connections with each other while staying in the target language. Every day we are moving, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking!

My students are a highly motivated group of young adults that see the value of education.

Our student population is extremely diverse, but the reality is they have very little exposure to any Spanish speakers or Spanish speaking cultures. They do, however, understand the importance of supporting each other and lifting others up while they strive to become knowledgeable global citizens. Our school embraces rigorous academics with strong support systems to help our students find success.

My Project

Currently, we have 18 books for free read time. This is not nearly enough with classes of 34 students to provide choice or variety. Through reading highly engaging books, students will build proficiency in Spanish and apply those skills to listening, speaking and writing in the target language. With these literacy resources, students can build vocabulary and gain confidence in the Spanish language.

Students will read individually, in small groups, and as a class during our "free read" time to enhance not only their knowledge of Spanish, but of Hispanic culture as well.

These resources (book sets and books on CD) will help our 7th grade students for years to come by opening their eyes to their ability to make connections as global citizens through acquiring another language.

Reading improves language abilities while also supporting learning in other subjects. Many of the books we are trying to get are Spanish readers with a STEM focus. Ultimately, the foundation they build in Spanish will help them be better communicators as adults and engage them with diverse communities.
