Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 4th and 5th grade students are a diverse and integrated group of learners. In our Spanish Dual Language class, some students come from Spanish speaking families, but many students do not. Some students receive special eduction services, while others do not. Students' families come from all over the world and speak many different languages.

My students love to read and look forward to independent reading every day.

In our bilingual class, some days we read in English and some days we read in Spanish. Most of my students are much stronger readers in English than in Spanish. Unfortunately, we do not have enough interesting Spanish books at their level in the classroom, so students have a hard time practicing their Spanish reading.

My Project

My students love to read! In English, most of them are reading close to grade level, and they devour the books in our classroom. In Spanish, many of my students are reading at a 2nd or 3rd grade level. My classroom does not have enough Spanish books to motivate my students to read in Spanish.

We need more Spanish books that my students can read, understand and enjoy.

It is impossible to encourage students to read in Spanish when we do not have the appropriate books in the classroom. With these books, my students will be on the path to becoming truly bi-literate.
