My Students

My Brooklyn, NY students light up the room with their smiles and plant perseverance and gratitude in others’ hearts.

My students have multiple and severe disabilities, and they love to discover and learn.

Our 3rd-8th graders experience vocational programs once to twice per week during the school day and during the four-day afterschool program each week. Our vocational classrooms are thriving hubs of exploration, laughter, and learning daily. We offer training in various store, custodial, and office work positions. This year, we have added a second classroom. We are expanding our vocational offerings to include hydroponics, which will supply our cooking program. We are so excited! Vocational education supports our core academic, theater, dance, and photography programs. Vocational seeks to give our students the foundations and tools they need to become more autonomous and independent in high school and adulthood.

My Project

These books about work will become part of a starter library for our vocational classroom. While we have already expanded our vocational program offerings this year, students have expressed additional interest in art and bookmaking. The extra supplies requested will be used to create an art and bookmaking center where students can illustrate and write their books.

I chose these books and art supplies with my students in mind.

Students will be able to choose books that align with their interests and inspire them to illustrate, write, and publish books independently and with peer and adult support. Through reading, writing, and book creation, students will improve their literacy and creativity skills essential to work and life.
