Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In the sixth grade, Social Studies consists of a survey of the history, geography, and culture of various regions and continents in the Eastern Hemisphere. As my sixth graders at I.S. 61 study each region, I require them to work in groups on a country project. Each group studies a specific country in depth and shares their findings with the rest of the class. While my students are excellent researchers, they need the resources from which to find the information. I scour both the school library and the public library to temporarily supply my students with the tools they need. It would be useful to have a permanent class library of books that the students could access at any time. I have found the "Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series of books to be an excellent resource, providing in-depth information and illustrations at a reading and interest level appropriate to my students. I would like to request books from the "Lands, Peoples, and Cultures" series that cover several European countries. The books on Greece, Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland and Sweden will allow my students a deeper understanding of this important region of the world.
