Library MakerSpace: Extending the Impact!

My students need enough materials in our MakerSpace so that an entire class can work at the same time. This means we need more Little Bits, KNex, and Makey Makeys.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school library is a busy, active place. Students come in all day long, individually, in small groups, or with classes for all sorts of information needs and wants. Students read, use the computers, do research, and learn new things.

Our elementary has almost 700 students from Pre-K through 4th Grade.

Eighty percent of our student body is of Non-English background, and twelve different languages are spoken by our families. Spanish and Arabic are the two most represented languages. We are truly a multicultural neighborhood school, with all of our students living in apartment buildings within a one and a half mile radius of the school building. Our socio-economic level is high need with 99% of our students qualifying for free lunch. Our students love coming to school and they love to learn! This project means so much to our students because they do not have access to expensive technology at home.

My Project

These materials will be housed in a MakerSpace area within the library where all students will have access to them. I hope to be able to use the materials with whole classes and small groups. Students will be able to make, create, and build, and learn real life skills from these projects. Our library is already a busy place, with students coming in to check out books, use the computers, and work with a class or small group. This will be one more way our library can meet the information needs of our students: the need to know how to create something. This project will give our students hands-on practice with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) projects that they might not otherwise get. It will enable them to be learners, planners, makers, and creators. It will give them exposure to technology concepts and ideas, and teach them that they can take an idea and make it a reality.

Last year, we were lucky enough to set up a basic MakerSpace funded through a DonorsChoose.org project.

We have been using the materials ever since with a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) Club that meets after school once a week. My goal with this additional project is to have enough materials for an entire class to work in the MakerSpace at the same time. So far, during the school day, we just have enough for small groups. It will be wonderful to work with an entire class!
