Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install, A lovely bookshelf on the wall." - Roald Dahl My technology obsessed students seem to have forgotten the love of books they once treasured as children.

I teach in a low socio-economic area with diverse demographics in an urban public school district.

Budget cuts have halted any new purchases for the school library and our librarian has returned to the classroom. Often the library is closed before school and at lunch, so students have limited access. Most of them do not have a public library card, so they must rely on what I have available in my classroom library. I know that if I had more current books in a variety of genres that students would be more inclined to check them out to read independently..for FUN (and an occasional book project)!

My Project

Your donation will help me begin to rebuild my classroom library so that students have immediate access to current, interesting, and award winning novels that may just take them away from their technology long enough for them to simply enjoy a good story and realize that reading can be an adventure. Students who read regularly are often more successful in school. Pleasure reading ignites curiosity, builds vocabulary, inspires independent thinking, promotes conversations and connects students to the world beyond the classroom. I want my students to have the opportunity to experience all of these benefits.

In a time when teens would rather watch television, YouTube, text, or be on Facebook for entertainment it is really difficult to keep them interested in reading.

By providing high interest books written by notable authors in a variety of genres in my classroom, many of my students may find that reading is fun again.
