Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Our TK-8 school serves 645 students, predominantly Latin and African-American. As a Title I school, all of our students are entitled to free lunch and extended social services.
All our students LOVE stories!
Whether in Kindergarten or 8th grade, they love coming to the library to hear a picture book or novel. Studies prove that students who are read to regularly have improved literacy skills, including comprehension and writing skills. Our collection focuses on culturally relevant books, to engage students with stories they can relate to, and explore stories different from their own.
Our students deserve the best in new, high quality, high interest books in their hands! California State requires a 25:1 ratio of books per student, yet our collection currently offers 11 books per student all year. We need every book available to us on the shelf to meet our students needs.
My Project
Our library was designed considering big kids, but is less accessible for the 4-6 year old students. Most of our bookshelves are 6 ft tall! We need accommodations to make the library accessible to the youngest in our community. We need a featured book display for the little ones to reach easily. We need music to make library time extra fun and exciting for them. We need more culturally relevant board books for our diverse population of students, because they are sturdy and easy to clean. And we always want more STEM stories and felt for interactive Story-time with our youngest scholars.
Every effort we make to give the littlest members of our community resources to feel welcomed and celebrated in our library is essential for deepening their love of reading and learning for life!
