My Students

I am a new fourth grade teacher with many students bright and curious students. We are part of a school with a strong leadership program, where students are involved with activities and decisions in the classroom and around the school community.

In this class, we build a community that celebrates our diversity, as well as shared experiences.

This knowledge will help my students to become stronger leaders and students as they navigate fourth grade. I challenge my students to think critically, making connections between their lives in their communities and across subjects.

My Project

Having diverse books in our classroom library is important to my student's reading experiences. Many books in schools are not representative of the diverse school communities. Students are not able to see themselves in books, which can make it hard for students to make connections to the materials he or she is reading for fun. When a student can "see" themselves in a book, they realize that their personal stories can be represented in literature. I've noticed that many classroom libraries are not updated with recent books, which may not be exciting or relatable for students.

As a teacher who is passionate about literacy, I want my students to be able to have access to a variety of books, in which they can delve into worlds similar to their own, while also making connections to characters and worlds of another community.

These new books will be the beginning of this diverse classroom library as I start a new grade level with my new students. I want my students' reading experiences to be positive (and comfortable) in the classroom and to have a classroom library that is continuously growing! My students will have access to our library, can complete work there, or to recommend books to their classmates.
