My Students

Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.

Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.

My Project

Students in my classroom do not always have access to books at home and most certainly do not have access to books on their individual reading level. It is important for students to read each night to practice the skills they have learned throughout the day.

My students are willing to read each night but need access to leveled books and a way to check them out each night.

This cart will provide the organization and structure for students to take home a book that is "just right" for them to read without any help. So much of the gap between my students and their more affluent peers is access to a large number of quality texts and this will help give them equal access to such resources.
