Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are students at a title one high school.. We are 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders studying film production. We are also part of the GSA, the Gay Straight Alliance at our school. Leigh is our advisor and she helps us set up activities, projects, and field trips. We are so lucky to go to a school that is not only accepting of the LGBTQ+ population but embraces it.
The GSA meets once a week to discuss coming out, current events relating to the LGBTQ+ community, hang out, and try to implement social change.
The students in our school are from all over NYC, some travel on a bus, boat, and subway for over 90 minutes one way just to get here! We are dedicated to our school and our LGBTQ+ student.
We decided that as a GSA club we wanted to do more service projects. Our fist project is to create a LGBTQ+ library section at our school. Having grade level texts showcasing characters and story lines that are LGBTQ+ inclusive will encourage us to read independently in our free time. The more we read the more we will build our vocabulary and literacy skills. We also would like to encourage everyone in our school to try a book from the LGBTQ+ section of the library. If others can read stories about LGBTQ+ characters and people then they can better empathize with what it is like to be a person from the LGBTQ+ community.
In Their Own Words
"I was really motivated and inspired by the service projects I've seen other GSA groups do. I want to do something that will enrich our LGBTQ+ students and our allies. What better way than to learn by reading stories about LGBTQ+ people! I want to create a space where students, no matter what their orientation is, can borrow a book and just for a little bit see what it is like to be a person who is LGBTQ+. I think this is going to help students come out of the closet, understand what it is like to be gay, or maybe just understand that we're all people and we all have similar experiences."
-Eve, GSA President
"This is going to be really great for us. We already did some research on what books to include and we are planning on setting up a brochure to distribute to the advisors and English teachers at our school so they can recommend these books. This is something we are doing on our own. It's our project, we're owning it! It'll be nice to start something and see it come to be."
-Alex, GSA Member
"We read books all the time in ELA and in advisory. So far we haven't read anything that focused on a character who was gay, bi, or trans. I want to see myself in what I'm reading and so far I haven't have the opportunity to do that. I'm hoping that by creating this library I can get more enjoyment from independent reading because I'll be reading about something I can relate to. I am also hoping that other students will learn more about what I'm going through by reading these stories."
