My Project

Our student body is filled with diverse middle schoolers from Brooklyn, NY. Once a week, after school, students come together during Diversity Club, which is the name of our Gender and Sexuality Alliance. For many of them, it is the only place where they feel like they can be themselves. It is an important part of social-emotional support at our school.

Being in middle school is difficult, and the Diversity Club offers a safe space for all students to gather.

During this time, students discuss school-wide and personal issues, receive support from their peers, and come up with solutions to problems. Because this club meets after school, and our earliest lunch period begins at 10:45 am, many students show up hungry and need a snack.

This project will ensure that everyone who has the opportunity to attend Diversity Club won't do so on an empty stomach. Snacks chosen contain gluten-free and vegan options, so everyone is included. It will increase participation as snacks usually do. No student will feel left out because they cannot supply their own snack. Students will be able to participate in a club that makes them feel welcome without worrying about their grumbling stomachs.

In addition, the games will allow the students to socialize in positive ways while talking about issues and learning about each other and themselves.
