My Students

Our middle school Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is a diverse group of thinkers and learners who come together in the spirit of learning about themselves, their community, and LGBTQ+ issues. We are a public, urban Montessori middle school, located in a historically diverse and low-income community. Seventy-seven percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Our students are committed to creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and their allies.

They crave the knowledge they need to give voice to their needs and to empower those who feel unseen and unheard. They are eager to take what they learn in the GSA to the greater community.

My Project

Reading can open a students’ eyes to worlds and perspectives outside of their own experience. Books can also be reflective, helping them to see their own lives better and therefore create more self-understanding. Moreover, during Distance Learning, more than ever, discussing books can give students a much needed form of connection with their like-minded peers. Books can create a sense of community that is absent in their regular classes and for which they long.

Our middle school Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) needs sets of books to read together this year.

These books will go directly to students at home. Through these books we will create and reinforce the safe space that LBBTQ+ students and their allies have come to depend on, even while being away from school. We will read them together to engage in conversations, learn about ourselves and the LGBTQ+ community, and share our newfound understanding with our larger school community.
