My Students

My students impress me every day. They engage deeply in the composition process as they strive to grow as writers, no matter the challenges they face.

Over ninety percent of my students are Hmong American, and many struggle with English language proficiency.

You can imagine the challenges that a composition course presents. Grammar rules that native English speakers simply absorbed as small children must be kept at the front of my teenage students' minds as they attempt mastery of rhetoric.

My Project

Thanks to previous DonorsChoose book donations, student interest in reading has notably increased since the beginning of this school year. One senior even remarked that she realized she could read "big books" if she cared about the story—she now considers herself a reader for the first time in her life. However, this interest hasn't grown so steadily across all demographics.

While I'd previously focused on engaging non-fiction and works by women of color, my goal with this installment of books is to bring in more LGBTQ+ and Asian stories. No classroom library is ever complete, and we appreciate all donors who help us continue to grow!
