Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and are a mixture of Hispanic and African American students. They are also students who have special needs. Parents do their best to provide the bare essentials that their kids need to start school but many times that is all that they can give them. Many of the families have at least 4 kids in the school. It is a lot to ask a family to purchase materials when some of them cannot pay their utility bills. Although the parents and the school community do their best to provide for the children, with budget cuts it is getting harder to provide them with tools for learning.

My Project

The novel April Morning will make a difference because it will challenge my students who are in seventh grade but who are reading at a high school level. Students will gain access to a novel that will prepare them for higher order thinking reading material that they will be exposed to in high school. They will become more engaged in their learning, writing and speaking skills. The subjects of love, war, religion, family, relationships are presented throughout the novel. Students will engage in discussions as to how these themes are presented in the novel and how they affect the main character. They will also engage in discussions about the American Revolution and how the novel conveys the message of freedom and what it costs.
