My Project

Students will read these novels as part of their English Language Arts curriculum. Our program--Goddard Scholars Academy-- is unique, as it is the only middle school in our urban district that begins with Grade 6. The students in the Goddard Scholars Academy program are students often performing at or above grade level, can engage text with solid fluency, and will make full use of all resources allotted to them to create content that is exemplary in nature. Due to the age and condition of our texts, we do not have enough books to complete a class set. Students often have to share their books and navigate through torn pages and faded print. We want our students to believe they deserve high-quality literature that represents the characters, cultures, and values that they can connect to.

We have worked to create rigorous standards-based lessons that not only target critical reading comprehension, written expression, speaking and listening skills, but also help students to understand the importance of value systems and civic engagement.

We also want to remind students of the joy that comes from reading from a crisp new book-- especially after learning from behind a screen for the past several years.

Your donation will allow them to see the joy and value in reading, and will help to prompt writing and discussion opportunities that encourage critical thought, civic engagement, and collaboration.
