Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am the coordinator for English language development and the dual language program at a school in the Mission district of San Francisco. I work with grades TK-8 with all students who are learning English as a second language and who are falling behind their peers academically due to a lower level of proficiency. The students at the school come from predominantly low-income backgrounds and Latino communities; several of my students are newcomers without any prior academic instruction in English and or experience with the specific demands of the U.S. school system.
While there is an ample amount of reading materials at the school, we are lacking in reading (and other) materials that are specifically adapted to meet the needs of English Language Learners.
What we are especially in need of are language proficiency intervention kits for the elementary students, readers and student workbooks for newcomers in the upper grades, and more books that reflect the experiences of Latin-american and immigrant students across all grades. As of now we are almost entirely without materials for English Language Learners (including that only $500 was allotted to immigrant students this year), and so would really appreciate your support.
Thank you,
Grace
My Project
This list of books I am requesting for my students includes readers for emergent readers grades K-2 that are specifically designed for English language learners in addition to high interest low reading level books for middle school English language learners just beginning to learn English as a second language. These are two key resources to help support our students in the lower and uppermost grades in our K-8 school.
Reading is a great way for English Language Learners and newcomers to solidify key vocabulary and high-frequency words in order to gain fluency.
Leveled readers allow for literacy and language intervention and support for readers with low levels of proficiency in English in addition to helping build confidence in emergent English readers. It is crucial that the language used is specifically tailored to students who are emergent readers who are also learning English as a second language, such as provided in the readers and books featured in this list.
The leveled readers for English language learners in grades K-2 are grouped in six to accommodate the group pull-out setting in which our English instruction for lowest proficiency English language learners occurs. The high-interest low reading level books for middle school students begin from a Pre-K reading level, but feature books of 48 page length, allowing students who are just entering an English-only academic environment to begin reading entire books in a foreign language. These students will read these books individually with one-on-one support from an instructor, but they will also be provided for students to choose from and read in class during independent reading time.
