My Students

Finding a Just Right book in our class library is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack! In a school where scavenging is the primary method of obtaining books, stocking appropriately leveled books for all students is nearly impossible.

My students are 6th-8th graders with intellectual and emotional disabilities and autism in a 12:1:1 self-contained, alternately-assessed class in Brooklyn, NY.

Over 90% of the school receives free lunch. Several of my students are English Language Learners. Academic abilities range from pre-K level to 5th grade in both reading and math. My class is very socially high functioning and VERY energetic. As middle school students, they are keenly aware of peer opinions and enjoy working cooperatively. They are eager to learn and participate readily in class activities, especially those that allow for movement. They love jokes and stories and tracking their own progress. They enjoy books-both being read to and looking through them on their own. Few of my students are independent readers, however.

My Project

My project is to create a structured approach to literacy for my students through use of Lakeshore's Leveled Library 1. Many of my students struggle to stay engaged during independent reading because they are unable to find books on their levels. They either choose a book that is too difficult and flip through too quickly, just looking at pictures or select a book far below their level, resulting in boredom. By ensuring that all students, from the earliest readers to the more advanced, can access a variety of texts on their levels, my students will find a new love of reading. Independent reading time will become a productive period where students choose and read on-level books and growth between levels can be assessed. Students will be able to track their progress from level A to level P and beyond, improving engagement and empowering students to set their own goals.

By donating to our Leveled Library project, you will be contributing to the reading success of students who have rarely experienced the feeling of finishing a book on their own.

My students have a real chance to move not just letter levels but grade levels up the reading scale. The ultimate goal for my students is to enter a Least Restrictive Environment, and literacy skills are extraordinarily important to success in a community school setting. Please help my students read and succeed!
