Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Before I describe my class's needs, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I am a second grade teacher at P.S. 115 in Washington Heights, New York and this is my first year teaching. I am very motivated to provide the support that my students need to grow and develop as young people; however, the resources provided at my school are not adequate. All students deserve to have "just right" books that make them confident readers and confident writers. I want to provide this for my students, but I don't have nearly enough books in my library to enable them to enjoy and develop their reading skills from their current level. I have many students that are low leveled readers, and unfortunately I do not have the books to support them. I am in great need of books levels A-F (leveled by Fountas and Pinnell). Most of the books I currently have in my library are too advanced, and I'm very concerned that the children will become frustrated by them, and might even turn away from reading altogether. Each student should be reading approximately 20 books a week at their "just right" levels, but sadly my students do not have nearly enough books in their level to do so. I have even had to resort to having them read the same book over because there are no new ones left. Reading is the basis of all academic achievement, and the first years of learning are absolutely critical. A collection of leveled books could really make a huge difference in these childrens' lives!
