What do you get when your special education classroom opens AFTER learning materials have been ordered and distributed for the year? A bare classroom and limited options of "just right books." We are starting our guided reading program but need a solid foundation of leveled book sets to do so.
Our inner-city, public school class is made up of eleven students who need extra support and guidance to be successful in school.
Despite their unique personal challenges, these students share a common interest: they LOVE to read in our classroom library. Unfortunately, because the class was opened just before the start of the school year, we have very limited resources, and the students will soon run out of books to look at in the library. In addition, we are unable to start our guided reading program without enough leveled books for each small group.
My Project
I am requesting leveled book sets - just the lower levels - to get our guided reading program off the ground. Guided reading is widely considered best practice for reading instruction, and the higher level of individualized attention is crucial for my students, who need a great deal of attention and assistance to learn. I am also asking for a few children's books of popular choice to add to our library, as well as a few books with reproducibles that will reinforce the skills learned during reading and language arts instruction.
My students share a common love for spending time in our library.
The classroom library is a cozy place with soft lighting and comfortable seating. It would be a shame for these students to lose their innate captivation with our classroom library just because they run out of books to read. I would also be disappointed to say that I could not provide reading instruction that is consistent with best practices simply because I didn't have the materials. Please help us!
