This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC, where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, all students with or without Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are provided a positive learning environment that addresses both their academic and social emotional needs as well as embrace their strengths; while giving them a sense of belonging.
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges; and will benefit tremendously from additional technology in the kindergarten classroom.
It should be noted, however, that all of our students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and have so much opportunity for growth and the potential for excellence, if provided good, daily instruction with the appropriate resources!
In my opinion, every kindergarten classroom should be equipped with a set of leveled books. Frequently, these books are used for guided reading. This approach recognizes that a wide range of reading ability exists within any grade level and/or age group. In my classroom, my kindergarten students rotate from station to station with one of the stations being guided reading with the teacher.
These leveled books build students' confidence while increasing both their reading comprehension and fluency (speed).
In addition, these books support classroom instruction in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and close reading of the text. Finally, using these books will help my students with early print concepts. These print concepts include one-to-one correspondence, reading left to right, and return sweep; as well as reading from top to bottom.
In closing, Kindergarten is the foundation of K-12 learning; and research has shown that our students profit most from a quality learning environment that includes exposure to different types of books on their instructional level. In this day and age, our kindergarteners must be both prepared and equipped for first grade and beyond. That being the case, your generous donations are an investment in our kindergarteners' future.
