My Students

Do you recall the excitement of your first years as a reader? How reading and comprehending new books captured your imagination and interest? My first grade students are eager to read books that are "just right" for them, but I lack the extensive classroom library to provide this experience

My students are bright and excited 6 and 7 year-old first graders who attend a neighborhood charter school in a low-income neighborhood.

We are in our third year as a turnaround charter school, and our students are making remarkable growth. My first graders are discovering the excitement of reading and learning every day, and the times set aside for independent reading are some of the most joyful times of the day. We need a more extensive classroom library full of leveled books so that students can practice reading on books that are just right for them!

My Project

First grade is a year of extreme growth in reading, when children go from pre-reading to reading books with many lines of text, dialogue, and complex sentences. In order to make this growth, students must practice reading books that are "just right" for them every day. With a classroom library full of high-interest texts such as the ones in the sets I requested, students will be excited to read their "just right," on-level, books each day during independent reading time. My students are reading on a wide range of independent reading levels from A (kindergarten) to K (second grade). It is with this in mind that I requested sets of books that span beyond the typical first grade range of reading levels. It's important that I am able to provide each of them with a wide variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, so that they can experience the excitement of reading and comprehending books that are "just right" for them.

A robust classroom library creates an exciting reading experience, especially for struggling readers.

As my students grow in their reading abilities, they will be able to experience the wide range of levels of books included in these sets. They will experience successful reading with both fiction and non-fiction texts in order to become life-long readers and learners.
