This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are joyous and enthusiastic multiple language learners. Most of my diverse kindergarteners are students with emergent language skills.

My kindergartners love to play pretend, sing songs, engage in movement activities, and learn their letters and letter sounds.

They are most excited about becoming readers and writers this year!

The kindergarteners are very excited to be back in the school building and we are just starting to go back to 5 days a week! All of my students had their pre-k classroom experience interrupted by COVID-19 last year. Some of my students never had adequate technology to be able to learn remotely with their class or their family was going through circumstances that prevented them from being able to do remote learning. Many of my students have been personally affected by the consequences of the pandemic. Our community had a high number of Coronavirus cases and experienced many of the traumas and consequences that come along with it, including loss of life and jobs, lack of child care, as well as food and basic need insecurity.

My Project

It's so important that all of the kindergarten students learn to identify their letters and learn their letter sounds to be able to read fluently. They need to practice applying their letter-sound knowledge by building words using letter manipulatives like magnetic letters. They also need to practice spelling high frequency words with magnetic letters. We don't have enough sets of magnetic letters for each child to be able to experience building words with magnetic letter tiles (we only have 1 set per grade). The pandemic has made it impossible to even share 1 set because of material sharing and cleaning protocols. And, our small school budget must be used to purchase the most basic supplies.

This donation will create a collection of magnetic letters that can be shared by the kindergarten and also some first and second graders who need to practice building words by sound and spelling high frequency words, both essential reading skills.

All of our students lost important time in their pre-kindergarten class last year because of the pandemic and these magnetic letters will really help them to catch up with their vital emergent literacy skills.
