My Students

I currently teach a self-contained class in a Title I school. Funding is very limited and so are the materials. Many of my students are English Language Learners and most (approximately 90%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. These students come to school excited for learning and love to get their hands on anything that will help increase their learning. Many of my students go home to houses with little to no updated technology. All students are reading 2 years below grade level. However, despite these setbacks my students are always eager to learn new and exciting things.

They drive off of the “Family” interaction that is fostered in our classroom.

They love to sit together and work together. My students and I have been together as a group since kindergarten and are now approaching 2nd grade together. We have grown and built many tight knit bonds with each other.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will help my special education students make learning fun again and continue to build their love for reading and writing. Learning about letters and words can be very hard for students with learning disabilities. The struggle to learn the letters, their sounds, and how they work together to create words often leads to negative feelings towards reading and writing because “It’s hard.” These games and activities will help my students learn all about their letters and words, especially their sight words! The activities will allow them different learning opportunities to find one that works best for them. Many of my students also receive Occupational Therapy and the hands-on activities will also help address their fine and gross motor skills. Please help me continue to build a love for reading and writing in my students, when it may not be their strongest suit.
