My Students

Reading an actual newspaper is a lost art; with everything going digital our students don't get the opportunity to experience the unique and rich history of the classic newpaper. There is something special about the feel and smell of a freshly printed paper.

My students live in the Nation's Capital the political epicenter of the world, where news happens every second on every street corner that you turn.

News also happens in their classroom, in their learning environments and in their homes. This is the feel good kind of news where we highlight the accomplishments and achievements. The school gets overlook when it comes to positive exposure; too many times the negative outweighs the good on what is reported. Yes, we are a title one school, which has struggled with attendance, yes we are a school that in the past has had difficulty narrowing the achievement gap, but we are also a school that has seen some of our alumni receive full scholarships to some of the most prestigious universities in our country. We are not just a good school we a great school that has terrific students and they need to be able to tell their story.

My Project

We need printing services for five issues of our school newsletter. We have some outstanding writers with creative ideas and they want be heard. There is so much going on that there is no real way of letting the word spread, not all of our families are connected to the internet to have access to our schools webpage and other digital media outlets. Our school relies heavily on the handwritten notes, and single sheets of paper to announce events and ongoings. We would send multiple notices home of events that occurred but that was just for the students' own class there is a real disconnect on what the whole school was doing the Chronicle would fulfill that need and be an enjoyable read. Everything traditional comes from the teachers; the newspaper would be an opportunity for students themselves to share their writing and leadership skills all the while bragging about their school. It would also be a vehicle for them to share and voice their concerns as well as advocate for movements that they believe in from the school uniform to the school lunches.

Our students are growing up in an ever changing environment in the shadows of the White House where political parties agree on barely nothing.

One of the objects for the paper will be for them to work together on a bi-partisan level where they will be able to report the happenings in the school in a non bias and fact based way al the while improving their literary and writing skills. It will generate an environment of unity amongst the students creating a fun place to learn.
