My Students

My class is a special day class for special education students. Most of my students are high functioning, but working below grade level. They are 3-5 grade, learning handicaps, autistic and/or deaf. They are at-risk, title one students working on grade level standards. They need support to succeed.

I have a great group of students.

They have made many gains, but still struggle with decoding, comprehension and need to be motivated to write and work on projects. They love science and technology - so using a tool like a computer to research their projects and see educational videos is a key motivator. They also can use tools like Kidsperation to help them organize their ideas and help them write. Many of my students do not have computers and/or the Internet at home. To work on our class and school projects is challenging for them. My 5th graders have to work on a special school project as well this year, but they need newer computers with internet access to do their research. Most do not take the special education bus now, so we can even have an after school study / research club in my room so they can work on their projects. Wouldn't that be great!

My Project

My class currently has one Pentium 2 desktop, and three iMacs. None of them can print, and the iMacs are not able to go on the Internet. They do work for older learning Cd's, and that is how my class uses them. - as a learning center. The PC barely turns on and does go on the internet, but it gets stuck and crashes. I am asking for a PC tower since I have monitors, keyboards and mice from when I go to the computer swap meet. I used to build my own computers from donated computers, so I have parts, but I don't have the skill or time to learn about the newer computers. Also the PC towers I found include software and are cheaper then buying the parts.

I love my special education students and I want the best for them.

They need motivation and tools to help them learn. Getting a newer computer that can help them write with graphic organizers, and a program that will read anything they highlight will help motivate them to want to learn.
