My Students

Many of my students do not know what is going on beyond our city, state, or country's borders. They do not know what challenges face teens worldwide. Please allow me to introduce my students to Malala. She stood up for the educational rights for Pakistani girls. She is proof that one voice matters.

Our school has many nationalities represented.

My students are high achieving, yet, from various different economic backgrounds. Our school is considered to be a school of need according to the number of students that qualify financially for free lunch programs. My students love to learn. They enjoy hands-on labs where they can create products or explain and explore why things occur.

My Project

My students would often complain about the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables available at their local grocery stores. Living in a food desert, the fresh produce options are limited. My students wanted an opportunity to put Science into work. My students inspired me to expand our school garden. This project will allow my 7th graders to learn about plants and help them to live healthier and more active lives. We learn about flower reproduction and photosynthesis each year. Through this project, my students will address the lack of fresh produce while learning about Science.

My students are training to be our future leaders.

My students really wanted this garden. This garden allows the students a chance to lead with their peers and within the community. All of our gardening supplies will be kept in the students' built shed. Building the shed, will allow the students to exercise and be outside being active for more than 60 minutes a day. The requested seeds, hose, gloves, and tools are a key component to growing plants and will be used in our raised garden beds. After the garden is ready for harvest, my students will plan how they will distribute the vegetables to the community. This takes plenty of planning, communication with other students and adults in the school and also the community. The students have to determine how they will market the fresh produce to the people that truly need it and arrange how to give it to those in need. These are all skills needed in college and in their future careers. This project also teaches the kids to think and consider others in need.
