Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a proud East Harlem K-5 community school social worker and counselor to twenty three students. The school is the part-time home to a population of 90% students of color, 40% of whom living in temporary housing.

Dynamic, lingusitically and culturally diverse, and resilient is what these students are!

This school works diligently to veer away from the traditional deficit model of education and instead promotes holistic instruction (here, social-emotional learning is just as important as academics), diversity, and inclusivity for its members, as, historically, school systems have not taken a more comprehensive approach to education, or the students in which they serve.

I thoroughly enjoy collaborating with these eager students to develop and implement individualized treatment plans that support their self-determination as they move forward in their life trajectory at the school, and beyond!

My Project

Social emotional learning is crucial to help prepare students to succeed in school and beyond. This diverse set of materials will help my students effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve healthy goals, feel and exhibit empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

As education professor Linda Darling-Hammond succinctly put, “I have no doubt that the survival of the human race depends at least as much on the cultivation of social and emotional intelligence, as it does on the development of technical knowledge and skills.

Most educators believe that the development of the whole child is an essential responsibility of schools, and this belief is what has motivated them to enter the profession.”
