My Project

Our 7th grade STEAM Science students will be exploring the plate boundaries at different locations on Earth, in an inquiry based immersion unit this year!! Immersion Units provide a coherent series of lessons designed to guide students in developing deep conceptual understanding that is aligned with the standards and key concepts in science. In Immersion Units, students learn academic content by working like scientists: making observations, asking questions, doing further investigations to explore and explain natural phenomena, and communicating their results based on evidence.

Student groups will be creating 3D models as they learn how plate tectonics how landforms have developed including mountain building, volcano formation, deep ocean trenches, and the catastrophic events that also occur such as major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions using the materials requested in this project!!!

Students will be creating 3D models as they learn more about how their region of the planet has formed, and include new information on their region models made with the materials requested in this project!! We will be exploring tectonic plate boundaries in California, Alaska, Chile, Japan, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, the Pacific Northwest, Mariana Islands, and Iceland/ Atlantic Ocean in this hands-on unit project!!

This immersion unit is the perfect investigation for students of all learning styles and is perfect for every learner in our fully inclusive Science STEAM program at Pio Pico Middle School. Our program consists of both GATE and SPED students, English speakers and immigrants from various countries, which allows students to also focus on regions where they may have more personal experience to add to the class knowledge!
